I am a lover of all things handmade and custom. This is the reason why I began seriously sewing for myself in the past few years. I loved making the clothing that I saw in the movies or on tv. The feeling of walking into a room, wearing a piece that you made is very calming ( because you know no one else is wearing the same piece as you) and gives you a sense of pride. Confidence on 10000%.
When planning my clothing for my recent trip to Mexico, I was inspired to wear intense colour and bold prints. Mexico was also all about pom-poms. In a previous post, I DIYed my own pom-pom beach bags. I used premade pom-poms and ribbons to make the beach bags but had a few leftover. So decided to make a hair barrette.
The hair barrette was a fun compliment to my gorgeous braids by StylesbyTiffanyDawn. StylesbyTiffanyDawn is one of the best hair braiders in Toronto. My braids were a last minute idea and I am happy that Tiffany was able to help me out. Do you want braids? Contact Tiffany and tell her MsChurchDress sent you ;)
The pom-pom barrette added to my instense color theme and the pom-pom is one of the best trends of the year. Most of all, it was a easy way to elevate my style at a very low cost.
It makes the process easier, less stressful and fun. The materials you need are below:
Lets get started. It is a good idea to have all of your materials together prior to starting a DIY Project.
First, I strung all of the premade pom-poms together using a needle and thread. Using a needle and thread, I ran it through the centre of each of the pom-poms.
The ribbons were cut at different lengths and then the blunt ends were weaved into the barrette grooves. Using the hot glue gun, I glued the blunt ends to the barrette and then quickly whip stitched the ends to make it a cleaner finish. The other end of the ribbons were cut on the diagonal to keep the ribbons from fraying.
TIP: Cut ribbon ends on the diagonal to prevent fraying.
So here is the tricky part. When you are glueing the string of pom-poms onto the barrette the glue may drip. Be careful.
TIP: Put your glue gun on a piece of scrap paper so the hot glue does not damage any surfaces.
Volia! A fun pom-pom barrette to add some flare to your braids. and overall outfit
I wore my barette with jeans and a white t-shirt. I wore it by the beach, to the airport and lounging by the pool.
Lots of compliments.
Low. Cost. Style.
