When Saks shuts down the store for you and your friends, you pinch yourself to make sure you aren't dreaming. Instead you realize you are living your dream! I love Saks and I was honored to be there amongst some of San Francisco’s fashion and beauty lovers to learn more about the best products to keep my skin gorgeous.
The evening was hosted by Blogger and style consultant Safiya Miller and focused on #agelessskincare. Even though I am aging beautifully I understand with age comes skin challenges. The best strategy to prevent any signs of aging is starting to care for your skin at a younger age.
I entered the room and sat with the guests, a mix of bloggers and esteemed Saks clients. At the front of the room there was a table filled with beauty products. I love all things luxury and it was a treat to see all of these luxury skincare products on display. Safiya sat on the panel along with three other bloggers who represented the different generations of beauty. Safiya represented the millennials as well as the melanin beauties.
5 Skincare Tips from Saks Fifth Avenue
The panel gave great suggestions on how to care of your skin at every age, some of their favorite products and tips on getting the prettiest glow. Here are some of my favorite tips I heard at the event:
What are some of your favorite skincare tips?
It was a great evening of snacks, skincare and friends.
Thank you Saks and Safiya for having me.
Zac Posen is literally the American dream. There is so much I can say about my love and admiration for Zac Posen as a fashion designer. He has become a huge part of my career and he doesn’t even know. Ha! I sat my first fashion week show, front row at the Zac Posen show in September of 2016. After attending the show I becamse obsessed with the world of Zac Posen and even more obsessed with gowns.
I recently sat business class with Air Canada and watched the Zac Posen documentary, House of Z. It chronicled Zac's rise, fall , pivot and overwhelming success. Zac Posen shared his emotional rollercoaster of building a fashion house with his family.
Last week, Neiman Marcus’ Ken Downing ( If you don’t know who he is, please google) brought Zac Posen to San Francisco. They both hosted an afternoon of fashion featuring Zac Posen’s beautiful collection. Together, they welcomed a grand list of guests and commentated the show. Every detail from the fabric selection, colors and prints were described. The show reminded me of fashion shows in the past. It was nostalgic and so intimate.
Neiman Marcus is my fav luxury store in San Francisco. They have welcomed me with open arms and when I shop there I feel like I am at home with all of my favorite fashion collections. I have attended Neiman Marcus events and shows before but they went all out for Zac Posen.
The room was spectacular with pink, purple and golden chairs, flower arrangements and the classic Zac Posen signage. Throughout the room there were displays of Zac Posen’s gorgeous gowns in red, purple and pink tones. There was a red carpet for the models and sparkling water, mimosas and lovely canapes for the guests.
I sat front row and experienced the movement of each gown. I loved listening to the commentary from Ken Downing and Zac Posen. They even discussed who Zac Posen would be will be taking to the Met Gala. We all wanted to know what he would be dressing them in. Wow! We got the exclusive info. You had to be there. Sorry. Ha!
What I can tell you are some of the trends Zac told us to look out for. Here are the top 10 fashion trends as per Zac Posen:
It was a show I will never forget. Don’t tell anyone but in my opinion, the show was better than some of the shows I have attended in New York. Simply because it was smaller, more interactive and much longer than traditional NYFW shows.
At the end of the show I spoke with some of San Francisco’s fashion starlets. I looked to my right and there was Zac Posen. “ Wow, you look amazing” said Zac Posen… to me. My response “Why Thank you and welcome to San Francisco”.
My life was made.
What I wore:
Jacket- H &M
Shoes- Manolo Blahnik
Skirt- I made
Bag- Saint Laurent
Thank you Neiman Marcus for having me.
Zac Posen you are the king of gowns.
I will never forget being in my grade 10 chemistry class and realizing that I wanted to pursue a career in chemistry. I finally figured out what career I wanted to pursue but was concerned that the world of science wouldn’t accept a woman of color. It really troubled me. My Dad was a carpenter and my Mom was a dressmaker. Both had no connection to the health care industry. My Aunt was an accomplished Registered Nurse and I had her as a great example of success in the health care industry. I didn’t feel lost but I needed direction. I was determined to find my way in the world of health care.
My high chemistry exam scores caught the attention of my teacher and she enrolled in a mentorship program in Toronto, Canada. My mentor was a pharmaceutical lab technician. I would meet my mentor, ask questions and discuss plans for the future. This program was very similar to the MIMS program in Oakland, California.
The MIMS (Mentoring in Medicine and Science) Program is a non-profit organization in Oakland, California with a mission to increase the number of underrepresented health professionals through mentoring, leadership development and career exposure. MIMS has worked with 150 health care professionals to mentor high school students who are pursuing careers in the health care industry.
Being a Biochemist, the MIMS program recently paired me with a high school student to share my experience in Diabetes and Cancer Research. Meet Naomi, a Grade 12 student who has a passion for nursing. After the death of her family member as a result of cancer and seeing the quality of care in her native country of Ghana, Naomi is determined to become a nurse to help others. Naomi would be the first nurse in her family. Naomi enrolled in the MIMS program to help her prepare for a career in health care. I met with Naomi to talk to her more about the impact of the MIMS program on her academic life. Watch the video below to hear what she had to say.
Sitting down with Naomi was like sitting in front of a mirror. She reminded me of myself, my love for science, medicine and the entire health care industry. The MIMS program is helping youth achieve their dreams by taking the time to give them the tools, skills and resources they need to succeed.
Thank you to the MIMS program for connecting me with Naomi. I look forward to witnessing Naomi accomplish her goal in health care. To learn more about the MIMS program visit their site here, http://www.mimscience.org
