DIY POM POM Beach Bags

Filed in: Fashion

Mexico. What is the first thing you think about? I immediately think about colour and rustic fabric textures. Sigh! I live for colour and fabrics and ideas and trims and… I can go on and on. The internet added to my Mexico fashion day dreaming.
After googling for hours, I decided to use intense colours, printed, light fabrics  as the theme for my wardrobe in Mexico.

Pom-poms have been all the rage this year. Some of my fashion icons such as MissCharmsie created a great DIY for Pom-pom gladiator sandals with feathered and tassels. Fashion Influencer Monica Awed featured pom-pom s MABU BY MARIA BK sandals in recent posts. But then I saw this bag by Dolce & Gabbanna.

Dolce & Gabanna Pom-Pom Bag

This Dolce & Gabbana really hit the mark with the colour and texture of this pom-pom style bag. I immediately knew that my trip to Mexico would have to include some form of pom-pom accessories. The only issue is that I didn’t know how to make pom-poms. I headed to Pinterest where I found instructions on how to make pom-poms using a chair, yarn and scissors. See the DIY here .
It is a good idea to have all of your materials together before starting a project.

Materials Needed:

  • Pom-poms that you made
  • Yarn
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue Gun
  • Hot glue sticks
  • Needle
  • Thread
  • Ribbons
  • Beach Bag, Fanny pack or any bag you prefer
  • Mini tassels
  • Premade Pom Poms
  • Time

*Pick pieces within your budget and the colours you prefer.

I made these pom-poms using the Pinterest DIY.

I made pom-poms in blue, purple and I mixed the colours together to create a yarn marbles effect.   Pom-poms can come in every size. I shaped them into the sizes needed for each bag.
The dollar store also has premade neon pom-poms so I picked up some of those as well.  At Michael’s I picked up some tassels and sewed them onto both the dollar store pom-poms and the handmade pom-poms.

TIP: Take time to shape your pom-poms. You want each pom-pom to be  a spherical shape.

I also used some left over ribbons and braided them together to create an artisian feel to my beach bag. For the black beach bag, I hot glued the pom-poms onto the bag. For the fanny pack I sewed some pom -poms directly onto the fanny pack.

Volia! I transformed two bags into fun travel pieces with the simplicity and eccentricity of pom- poms with the help of Pinterest. Anddddd I am totally on trend.

Do you like the pom -pom trend?
Would you make your own pom-poms or buy them?
